Do the Slow Work

Read time: 4 minutes • A quiet moment for you

Hi Reader,

Welcome to my weekly newsletter, designed to help you Rise on Purpose.

Last week, I wrote about speaking less to say more. If you missed it, you can read that, and all previous articles, here.

And because a few good words can change the direction of your whole day, I wrote a FREE PDF guide: 7 Things to Tell Yourself Every Day. If you'd like to receive it, hit reply and I'll send it straight to your inbox.

Do the Slow Work

There’s a quiet kind of work that doesn’t get much attention.

It doesn’t look impressive from the outside. It’s not fast, visible, or immediately rewarded by a ping on your phone. But over time, it’s the work that matters most.

The slow work.

Building real human relationships. Creating something consistently. Showing up, even when there’s no immediate return.

It’s easy to get pulled towards what’s quick: quick wins, quick responses, quick validation. But the things that actually last are usually built more quietly than that.

And they take time.

This week’s tool: Stay with the Long Game

Pick one area of your life or work where you’ve been chasing speed or short-term results.

Then ask yourself:

“What would this look like if I approached it more slowly?”

Not less effort. Just more intention.

That might look like:

– Investing in one meaningful relationship instead of spreading yourself thin
– Creating something consistently, even if it’s not seen straight away
– Taking the time to think something through, rather than rushing to respond
– Focusing on what builds over time, not just what lands today

You don’t need to do everything slowly.

Just choose one thing and stay with it a little longer than you normally would.

Why this works

We’re naturally drawn to immediacy. Our brains are wired to respond to quick rewards, fast feedback, and visible progress.

But some of the most valuable things in life - trust, credibility, meaningful work - don’t operate on that timeline.

They build gradually.

And in a world where so much is becoming automated, instant, and AI-generated, this matters even more.

Because what can’t be replicated at speed is real connection.

The conversations you’ve taken time to build with people you care about.
The trust someone feels when they know you, not just your latest social media update.
The people who choose to hear from you, not because they’re targeted, but because they trust you.

When you focus on slower, more deliberate work, you’re building something that isn’t easily replaced.

Psychologically, this also creates a deeper sense of control and stability. You’re no longer dependent on short-term validation, you’re invested in something that compounds.

And that changes how you show up.

You become more patient.
More consistent.
More grounded in what actually matters.

The results may take longer.

But they tend to last.

Keep rising,
Lauren

P.S. Where in your life would it help to slow down, and build something that lasts?

A Note from a Reader

After last week’s email, Sophia, a marketing lead in New Jersey, got in touch:

"I used the one-idea rule in a client presentation, and it completely changed how I showed up. I felt calmer, clearer, and for the first time, I didn’t feel the need to fill every silence."

Sometimes the shift isn’t about doing more.

It’s about doing one thing differently, and letting that be enough.
