Ask For Help

Read time: 4 minutes • A quiet moment for you

Hi Reader,

Welcome to my weekly newsletter, designed to help you Rise on Purpose.

Last week, I wrote about hitting send before you feel ready. If you missed it, you can read that, and all previous articles, here.

And because a few good words can change the direction of your whole day, I wrote a FREE PDF guide: 7 Things to Tell Yourself Every Day. If you'd like to receive it, hit reply and I'll send it straight to your inbox.

Ask For Help

My sister fondly calls me a self-cleaning oven. My default since childhood has been to deal with things independently. And this served me well for a long time. But then came the leukaemia diagnosis and I depended on Sarah to help me eat, walk up the stairs and get through the nausea-ridden nights.

What I learned in the most dramatic fashion is that while an iron will and brute determination can get you far, support can carry you much further.

You probably have your own version of this.

Maybe it's a health setback you're keeping to yourself, or a decision you're circling alone that someone else could help you see clearly in two minutes, or a week where you're stretched thin, but the words "I need help" never quite materialise.

We treat asking for help like an admission of failure. Like it proves we can't actually do this. But it really doesn't have to be that way. Carrying everything alone when you don't have to is the slower, harder path.

Asking is the stronger move, not the fallback one.

This week’s tool: The One Ask

Most of us don't avoid asking for help because we're too proud. We avoid it because we haven't named, specifically, what we need.

So this week, pick one thing weighing you down and ask:

"What's the one specific thing I could ask for that would make this lighter?"

Not "I'm overwhelmed". Something concrete enough that someone else could actually say yes to it.

I find these two particularly helpful:
→ asking a trusted person to just listen, without needing them to fix anything
→ saying "can you take this one thing off my plate" instead of trying to look fine

Support only works when it's specific. Vague overwhelm is hard for anyone to help with. One clear ask is easy to say yes to.

Why this works

Taking it all on yourself feels like control, but it's often just an unnecessary burden. The moment you ask for something specific, you're not handing over the whole problem, you're sharing the load of one part of it. That's usually enough to feel your shoulders drop and to think clearly about the rest.

Capable people are often the last to ask, because they're used to being the ones who are asked. But resilience isn't about proving you don't need anyone. It's about knowing when letting someone in is the best choice you can make.

Whatever you're carrying alone this week, I hope you find the one ask that makes it lighter.

Keep rising,
Lauren

P.S. What's one thing you could ask for help with this week, if you let yourself? Hit reply, I read every response.

A Note from a Reader

Marta in Belgium got in touch to let me know that after last week's email, "Hit Send", she did exactly that! I love reading messages like this, they show me you're taking action to build the life you want and deserve.

Messages like this are exactly why I write this newsletter.

Proud of you, Marta.
